december 2020 commencement ceremony details

time: 11am and 2pm 
location: stocker stadium (outdoor venue) and streaming online

based on recommendations from mesa county public health (mcph), colorado mesa university will host two graduation ceremonies on friday, december 11, one at 11am and one at 2pm, based on the student's academic department. stocker stadium (outdoor venue) and parking lots will open one hour before the ceremony. 


in order to stay within mcph guidelines for gatherings, each graduate may receive two tickets for family/friends to attend the ceremony. tickets will be distributed electronically and can be reserved through university tickets starting tuesday, dec. 1 at 12pm through friday, dec. 4. graduates may reserve their tickets based on which ceremony they are assigned to and must include their guest(s) names and unique cell phone number for each ticket.

mandatory covid testing

based on recommendations from mcph, all graduates and attendees are required to test for covid-19 24-96 hours prior to attending the ceremony.

to streamline testing and ticketing, we are encouraging all graduates and their guests to make an appointment at cmu’s on-campus testing site or at one of our affiliated-front range testing sites — an appointment is required and can be made at when you arrive to test, please let your check in person know your appointment is for colorado mesa university's commencement ceremony. 

to attend the ceremony graduates and their guests must check-in with their four-digit code (code will be emailed/texted after testing at a cmu-affiliated site), or show a valid ticket (attendees only) and negative covid test result if testing at a nonaffiliated site, as well as be ushered into and out of the venue. please view the commencement covid testing site for full details.

commencement checklist

  • reserve two tickets for family/friends by friday, dec. 4.

  • sign up for a covid test at cmu's on campus site or front range affiliated sites.

  • arrive at your appointment on specified date, time and location. please let your check in person know you are there to test for colorado mesa university's commencement ceremony.
  • you will receive a text/email within 24-48 hours of your results.
  • you will receive an additional text/email with a four-digit code. bring this code with you to enter commencement ceremony.

11am ceremony includes graduates from the following academic departments:

  • Art & Design
  • biology
  • engineering, computer science, construction management and cu engineering
  • kinesiology
  • languages, literature and mass communication
  • liberal arts (university and general studies)
  • math and statistics
  • music
  • physical and environmental sciences
  • social and behavioral sciences
  • teacher education
  • theatre arts

2pm ceremony includes graduates from the following academic departments:

  • business
  • health sciences
  • western colorado community college

a professional photographer from mj thomas will be at the ceremony. guests may take pictures from their seats.  

please contact mj thomas at if you have any questions regarding photos taken at/near the stage during the ceremony. 


guests will use the main entrance to stocker stadium, pick up a commencement program and proceed to the seating area. please maintain appropriate social distancing. there will be select seating for elderly and disabled guests. once seated, we ask guests to remain masked and seated throughout the program. after the program, the graduates will recess to the parking lot area. access to the field is limited to graduates and commencement staff.

ceremony instructions for graduates:

  • graduates should arrive 45 minutes prior to the ceremony. after parking, graduates should follow the path along the east side of the baseball stadium outfield fence. 
  • stop at the name card/honors cords table. your name card will have your processional group for seating prior to the ceremony and is required as you walk across the stage during the ceremony. honors cords are provided for baccalaureate or associate degree students with a 3.50 gpa or better in their cmu courses.  
  • graduates should follow the signs to the correct processional group seating area in the baseball stands. please sit or stand with your processional group while we wait for all graduates to arrive.  
  • the ceremony procession will be lead by faculty, then group a, b, and c. within each processional group there is no order; groups of friends should be in single file in front or behind each other as we start walking. please stay 6' spaced. when being seated in stocker stadium, keep in mind that your group may be split between rows. 
  • during the ceremony, you will be guided when to sit, stand, and walk up to the stage. as you arrive on stage, set your name card on the podium, nod at the president, and pick up your diploma cover from the table. after you exit the stage, a professional photographer will take a mask optional photo, then proceed back to your seat.  
  • at the end of the ceremony, all graduates will recess out of the stadium back to the parking lot where they may meet with guests if desired.
